During Thursday’s NFL Honors ceremony in New Orleans, Eagles running back Saquon Barkley made team history. He became the first Philadelphia player to snag NFL Offensive Player of the Year since the award started in 1972.
A group of 50 media members voted, with Barkley winning easily. He got 35 first-place votes and racked up 406 points through the weighted voting system.
His 2024 season put him among elite company. By rushing for 2,005 yards, Barkley joined just eight other NFL players who’ve hit the 2,000-yard milestone. He came close to Eric Dickerson’s record of 2,105 yards.
“When you come to a place, you want to leave your legacy. You want to have an impact. The best example is when you think of Marshall Faulk, do you think of the Colts or do you think of the Rams? So that’s my goal to be here and leave my legacy,” said Barkley to NBC Sports Philadelphia.
His big runs broke NFL records. Seven times he burst free for touchdowns of 60+ yards. The milestone moment – reaching 2,000 yards – happened as the Eagles demolished Dallas 41-7 to lock up the NFC East title.
“So much love, man, and I know you don’t rush for 2000 yards by accident, and you don’t do it by yourself… I have the best offensive line in the league and you can make an argument, one of the best offensive lines ever, and I’ll argue with you all day because I firmly believe that,” Barkley said.
No other player had achieved this feat in the NFL’s 17-game format.
The Eagles’ success went beyond Barkley. Defensive backs Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean stood out in Defensive Rookie voting, finishing second and fourth. Vic Fangio landed fourth for Assistant Coach honors, while Zack Baun ended up fifth in Defensive Player voting.
