Buffalo Wings Are the Favorite Super Bowl Snack in 31 States, Survey Finds

Buffalo wings

A new survey of 3,000 Americans shows buffalo wings are the top Super Bowl snack across 31 states. These spicy, saucy wings are especially popular in states east of the Mississippi River, including Pennsylvania and Missouri.

Seven states, including Massachusetts and Alaska, picked chips as their game-day favorite. Meanwhile, cheesy nachos grabbed third place, coming out on top in five states including Colorado and Wisconsin.

The study showed different snacking preferences by region. While California, Michigan, and South Dakota preferred pizza, states like Iowa, Kansas, and Montana favored cheese boards. Hawaii stood out from the crowd, choosing loaded potato skins as their favorite.

When it comes to dips, warm queso is the winner in 18 states. Buffalo chicken dip follows close behind, taking the top spot in 16 states. Seven-layer dip comes in third, winning over five states.

Most Americans – a whopping 84% – prefer salty snacks during the big game. This fits right in with the traditional mix of spicy, crunchy game-day foods.

Wings weren’t always the go-to football snack. They became popular in the early ’90s, when the Buffalo Bills’ back-to-back Super Bowl appearances put their hometown dish in the spotlight.

Back in 1964, a lucky accident created the first buffalo wing. At Buffalo’s Anchor Bar, Teressa Bellisimo made something special out of leftover chicken wings by coating them in her special hot sauce. Her quick thinking turned unwanted wings into America’s favorite snack.

From chips in chilly Alaska to potato skins in tropical Hawaii, the survey shows how Americans love different Super Bowl snacks across the country. Each state brings its own taste to this yearly tradition.
